This past week we lived through two greatly anticipated events. One bad, one good, but the question for both was... would either live up to the hype?
The first was Hurricane Irene. For the whole preceding week, the news seemed to talk of nothing other than wind speeds, the projected path and the anticipated damages. From Boston we watched and waited. We were supposed to be hit on Sunday. We watched the pictures of the Carolinas and Virginia. The church service (and our presentation) was cancelled in anticipation. When Sunday finally came, we hunkered down to wait out the storm. We waited through the winds and heavy rain.
We were extremely thankful that the only real hardship we had during Irene was the loss of electricity, but this is where our Africa experience came in handy. Power outages were frequent on the island. So we were able to show Grandma how to use her gas stove even without the electric starter and Grandpa how to make popcorn the old fashioned way (without a microwave).
The day after the hurricane, the skies were beautiful and the weather was perfect. Overall Irene was an impressive storm, but we were very thankful that things hadn’t been worse (especially considering the continued devastation that Irene was inflicting elsewhere).
The second highly-anticipated event was Disneyland. We flew to San Francisco on Monday and then down to LA on Tuesday. Wednesday was the planned day at Disneyland with Uncle Matt, Gram and Grandad. Would our daughter be too young? Would the kids be wrecks from all the travel?
Well the kids did great and our daughter loved every minute of it. She met the princesses, rode the Dumbo ride, saw a parade and much more. We even got both kids to nap and were able to enjoy some of the attractions ourselves. Another opportunity to be thankful.
PRAYERS ANSWERED
We made it safely to CA, our flight was not cancelled and the effects of Hurricane Irene in our area were not extreme. We had a wonderful time in Southern California and were able to connect with some old friends and family we haven’t seen in a long time. Our team leaders and kids have made it back to the islands safely. The time of fasting on the islands has come to an end. It ends with a big holiday. We tried to call to wish people a happy holiday but we were only able to get a hold of one of the brothers and send our greetings to our friends on the islands.

PRAYERS REQUESTED
Pray for our team leaders as they get back into island life. Pray for other teammates who will be joining our team leaders in the next few weeks. Pray for us as we continue our whirlwind tour. We will be with our church family in CA this week and next week before going to Ohio. Pray for us as we share with different people about the islands and God’s work there.
