This week we had an opportunity to work together as a team. As we’ve mentioned before, Tom works with a group of university students who teach English. Tom is their adviser and teacher. The group teaches English classes and the whole venture is volunteer. Tom and the teachers give of their time for free to make the program happen. They only charge a small fee to pay for the photocopies of the lessons. Even the classrooms where they teach are given to them for free—they aren’t rented. So this week we went and said thank you for the use of that space.
On Sunday afternoon our whole team joined all the guys from the teaching group. Armed with buckets and brooms, dust pans and rags, tolls and plastic bags, we went to work picking up and fixing and cleaning. It wasn’t long before our work had drawn some attention. Lots of people from the community had come out to look, and lots and lots of kids (probably students from the school) crowded around to see us at work. It was great to work side by side with our island friends and to make a small impact on the community. We even paid for a guy to come and fix the steps leading up to the classroom. It didn’t take very long, but it was a memorable and enjoyable afternoon, spreading love and friendship through service.
PRAYERS ANSWERED
Grace and Sergio and Peter are all doing well and recovered from their various sicknesses. The logistics in planning for the seminar all went smoothly and everyone arrived safely. The school project worked out well despite some hiccups in the planning. Chris had a good trip to Kenya and came back safely. Our two friends traveled abroad this week. Tom got to see both of them off at the airport. They have both arrived safely.
PRAYERS REQUESTED
The blog is a bit shorter this week because we are in the midst of a conference. We have eight visitors from one of the neighboring islands and two speakers who have come from Kenya. We are meeting all day long and learning about some important and difficult things about what it means to work where we work. Pray that the conference would continue to go well. Megan is suffering from a bad case of pink eye in both eyes. Tom seems to be developing it in one eye. Thankfully, the kids seem to be over it. Pray that we would all be healed and that it wouldn’t spread to anyone else (especially our visitors).
This blog was written Wed but couldn't be posted until today because the internet was so bad. Since then Megan's eyes are doing better and Tom's eye seems to be clearing up too.
